Whimsical Mobiles and Vintage Treasures

colorful mobileFrom unique furniture and vintage flash cards to wall decals and art, we’re always in search of inspirational objects for our kiddos’ rooms. We’ve been longtime admirers of Heather Frazier’s line of beautiful mobiles. We love these minimal and modern designs of vintage and found paper shapes, and are particularly enamored by Frazier’s pom pom mobiles. They’re colorful, vibrant and add the perfect addition of whimsy to any nursery or kid’s room. Frazier also shares her love of vintage by selling the treasures she finds in her online shop. There are some really special pieces you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere. forest girl

Each of Frazier’s mobiles is handsewn and constructed in her Portland studio. Drawing on inspiration from the materials she works with, color and the world around her, her designs reflect what she sees in nature, travel, design in all its forms, and people. Frazier creates mobiles and garlands of all shapes and sizes, some with bursts of color among a white background of shapes and some with rainbows of color. No two mobiles are exactly alike and size and detail range from piece to piece. Constructed from magazine pages or heavy stock white or colored paper, the finished mobiles look weightless and almost as if they are moving and standing still simultaneously. All mobile pieces are hand-cut, double-sided then strung with clear monofilament, which renders itself mostly invisible from a distance. Four strands of elements hang from a plexiglass disc creating the finished product.

Frazier’s current work evolved from her days as an owner and shopkeeper in San Francisco where she made garlands for her shop’s window and interior displays. Her patrons showed an interest in them and often told her she should sell them. Upon selling her store in 2005, Frazier moved to Portland, began developing her mobile designs and established frazier & wing, named after her mother (wing) and father (frazier). She started selling her mobiles and garlands on etsy in 2006 and saw a rapid response to her work, which allowed her to quickly create her own website. Initially, her mobiles and garlands weren’t designed with children in mind, but the kid’s market has been a large part of her following and we can see why. For more information visit, frazier & wing. Prices range from $8 treasures to $68 mobiles and up.
