The weekend forecast is calling for sun and fun! With all of the events coming up, my family can’t decide what to do first! Here are a few of the outings we’re considering:

The Robin Hood Festival of Sherwood Oregon

Close to 20,000 people attend the Sherwood Robin Hood Festival the 3rd weekend of July each year. The event is free to the public. It features Medieval re-enactments, music & entertainment on two stages, a knighting ceremony, a kids and family area, an international archery contest between Nottinghamshire UK and Sherwood Oregon, a castle building contest, a teen dance, a flower contest, a beer & wine garden, food and crafts vendors and much more! Old Town Events take place Friday, 5-11pm and Saturday, 9am-11pm near Sherwood City Hall and the archery events take place Saturday and Sunday at Edy Elementary School. Cathedral Park Jazz Festival

The Jazz Society’s Cathedral Park Jazz Festival is a FREE concert open to the public and held over three days in mid-July at Cathedral Park at the base of the St. Johns bridge in the Cathedral Park neighborhood of Portland. Now in its 37th year, the festival is the longest running jazz and blues festival west of the Mississippi River. The Festival is a major musical event in the heart of summer for the Portland Metro area, and features the region’s best local jazz and blues musicians. It also fosters cooperation and pride in the north Portland neighborhoods of Cathedral Park and St. Johns, and recognizes and promotes the community’s local businesses. The Festival kicks off at 5pm on Friday and entry is free. jazzoregon.com

Families in the Field: Forest Adventure

The shaded slopes of Scouters Mountain offer refuge from the summer heat for people and animals alike. Bring your family to explore this Douglas fir forest on this ancient volcano, then play games and search for wildlife on a hike. Target age is 5- to 8-year-olds, though all children are welcome with guardian. Advanced registration is required, $11/family. oregonmetro.gov

Portland Highland Games

For more than 60 years, the Portland Highland Games have delighted participants with a unique, Scottish experience featuring incredible Scottish pipe bands, bag pipers and drummers, dancers and athletes. Come enjoy a full day of this Scottish festival. Explore Scottish clan tents and learn about your Scottish history (you may be surprised to find a little Scottish in ya). Immerse yourself in the music and culture. Watch fun demonstrations (like our popular sheep dogs) and be inspired by powerful athletes competing on the Heavy Athletics field. Become a whisky connoisseur in our whisky tasting tent. Shop for regional Scottish products and gifts, and enjoy tasty food (and yup – there is beer). The Big Float

Come Join the River Starts Here gang and 3,000+ floaters, observers and after-partiers at Tom McCall Bowl with crazy floats and costumes, have your photo taken and float on the Willamette River. This is a fundraiser to provide more access to the river! And yes, the river is safe to swim in AND its warmer than you expect! Bastille Day Celebration

Join the largest Bastille Day celebration on the west coast with the annual Waiter’s Race; French-themed cuisine; live music; fencing demonstrations; vendors, and beer and wine for the grown-ups! This event has attracted over 8,000 revelers in the past, so plan for a busy day in Jamison Square! Free, 12-6pm. afportland.org
