Uncommon Sense
There’s a lot going on in the world right now, and if we want our kids to start thinking about social justice, we can take opportunities like this to make it fun and engaging. Echo Theater Co., sister:grit collective, Tempos Contemporary Circus and Sir Cupcake’s Queer Circus are coming together this month to present Uncommon Sense. The performances will explore the relationship between self and society, the relationship between assumptions and expectations, how limitations can give us the opportunity to be creative, and much, much more. Family Volunteer Day
This Friday is Inauguration Day, and tensions may be running high. But no matter who our president is and how you or your neighbors may feel about him, it’s important that we all stay connected as a community. Join PDX Parent this Friday in a day of giving back, community healing and growth, as they partner with over a dozen local organizations to give you family-friendly volunteer projects in Harper’s Playground at Arbor Lodge. There will be something for everyone to do! Beautify, spread mulch and maybe even plant some spring bulbs! Coffee, cocoa and light snacks will be provided. All ages, please register on website. Honey Tonic Workshop
Kids love sweets (do we ever grow out of that?), and this workshop is a great opportunity to steer them in the direction of nature’s magical alternative to refinded sugar: honey! Led by the passionate health and wellness specialist Hillary Bergh of Bee Thinking, this workshop will teach you how honey has been used traditionally as a remedy for many ailments. Topics will cover how honey is made in the hive, honey’s role in folk medicine and recipes for using honey with herbs. Groovy Tie-dye Date
It’s a fact: tie-dye will never go out of style, and with good reason! Who doesn’t love kicking it on a Saturday afternoon in their favorite swirly, colorful hand-dyed tee? Grab your little hippies and head to Smartypants for an afternoon of twisting and dip dying and having a messy good time. You’ll all learn some cool, new techniques, too. Each kid will get a Smartypants t-shirt to dye, but you can also bring your own 100% cotton clothing items to dye. And remember to wear clothes you don’t mind getting spotty!
