October 2018
October at long last! Having made it through September and the chaos of a new school year starting, this is when we really find fall’s sweet spot. Brisk mornings, leaves crunching beneath boots and of course the ubiquitous pumpkin spice… well, everything! In my house, October is mainly about Halloween preparations and to be perfectly honest, I started getting my spider web and bat decorations out of storage at the beginning of September. With all of the stresses and challenges that we all face, any opportunity to extend traditions that bring joy are more than welcome in my house. We are so lucky to live in a region that sees a true change of seasons. Apple picking, pumpkin patches and harvest festivals abound and I already have a couple new spots to hit this year (see pages 12-13!).
But October isn’t all about fun-size Twix bars and fresh pressed apple cider. This is also when we start planning ahead for the 2019-2020 school year. The Portland area has so many wonderful schools, from toddler age all the way through high school. Our kids are unique and education is not one-size-fits-all. From Waldorf and Montessori to language immersion and more traditional options, we have put together a guide that is sure to pique your interest. Take a look at some websites, attend a few open houses and explore. You never know what you might find. And for goodness’ sake, don’t be that house that gives out the yogurt covered raisins!
Cheers!
