- Wash hands with mild soap and water, or use and alcohol based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Avoid touching your face, and cough and sneeze into the crook of your arms.
- Limit unnecessary travel and cancel travel plans to areas with high infection rates.
- Limit unnecessary exposure by keeping gatherings less than 10 people.
- Clean and disinfect your home more frequently.
- Consider getting a flu shot if you haven’t already, and make sure your child received the recommended vaccine for pneumonia (PCV-13)
*Note: the above vaccines do not prevent COVID-19, but can lessen the stress on the immune system for those infected
Ask the expert
Q: “When Should I consider contacting my provider about COVID 19?”
A: “Currently there are two main scenarios that mean it’s probably time to call your kid’s doctor. The first is fever plus exposure, and may or may not include a cough. This means there are signs of illness an d you’ve come in contact with someone known to have the virus or have been in an area with known cases.
The second is the combination of a fever, a chronic medical condition and a cough. This means there are signs of illness and your child has a chronic condition such as asthma or heart disease.”
