My first recollection of visiting Portland was a stopover on a high school road trip to San Francisco in the spring of 1991.

Here in Portland, May is the prize that we all get to share in after the long rainy season; even those of us who aren’t particularly good sports about the darker, colder months.

This weekend, we pulled the kids’ bikes out of storage to get them ready for summer. We checked the tires, oiled the chains, bought new helmets— everything possible to make the kids as safe and comfortable as possible.

Toddlers are concentrated energy. They run, jump and tumble, not as part of a special event, but as their every-day means of locomotion.

I first took a second language in college: Russian. Why Russian? Well, Spanish was full and French started at 7am.

My baby is gone. My chubby-cheeked baby who refused to wear anything but dresses from age 2 until 7 is growing up.

I love winter. I love beanies and scarves. I love warm sweaters in cool colors, and I love the hand-knit socks my mother-in-law always sends, wrapped around festively-colored paper-wrapped Russian chocolates.

Sweet relief! Fall is here, and putting together this October issue has filled us with the hearty spirit of the season.

Do you remember your favorite childhood birthday party? The one that stands out for me is my sixth birthday; we hosted a Barbie fashion show party at home, complete with fancy decorations, a miniature runway and of course, a beautifully decorated cake.
